Jeyes Fluid vs glyphosate

Two outdoor concentrates often confused. Jeyes Fluid is a cleaning disinfectant for hard outdoor surfaces and drains. Glyphosate is a systemic herbicide that kills plants. They are not interchangeable.

§ 1What each is for

  • Jeyes Fluid · cresylic-acid blend. Cleans drains, paths, patios, bins. Not a weedkiller.
  • Roundup glyphosate · systemic herbicide. Kills annual weeds via foliar uptake. Not a cleaner.

§ 2Recommended dilution

Jeyes Fluid · general
1:40
125 ml per 5 L watering can
Roundup Fast Action
1:50
20 ml per 1 L knapsack

§ 3Regulatory and safety

  • Jeyes Fluid · outdoor use only; never on plants, ponds, fish tanks or indoor surfaces.
  • Glyphosate (amateur) · permitted for garden use under UK Pesticides Regulation. Wear gloves and eye protection.
  • Glyphosate (professional) · Roundup Pro Active and similar require qualification (PA1/PA6 spray certificate).

§ 4Which for the job

  • Smelly drain or wheelie-bin slime · Jeyes Fluid.
  • Algae on a north-facing patio · Jeyes Fluid (or a path-and-patio cleaner with benzalkonium chloride).
  • Annual weeds in paving cracks · glyphosate.
  • Knotweed or scrub clearance · Pro-Active glyphosate, by a qualified operator.
